Warning: Is Your Network Marketing Business a Fox Guarding the Hen House?

According to Federal Register, Volume 76, No. 67, dated Thursday, April 7, 2011, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is implementing a two year pilot program that allows biotech companies to conduct environmental assessments on genetically modified (GM) crops.

What this means is that biotech companies can basically self assess their activities. Unfortunately however, history has taught us that that many companies can't be trusted to police themselves, because they have a vested interest in making a profit. This is a conflict of interest. The same conflict of interest can exist in network marketing companies too, especially when it comes to marketing.

Getting the Word Out

Building a network marketing business requires you to let people know what you have to offer. One of the first things you're taught is the talk to your warm market, the people you already know such as family, friends, and acquaintances.

But once you've talke d to everyone you know, it's time to do cold marketing, talking to people you don't know, people you bump into as you go through your everyday activities. This approach takes the right mindset and strong fortitude. You're looking for people who are already looking for an opportunity, which is like looking for a needle in a haystack. And there's a lot more hay than there are needles.

Let People Find You

A better approach is to let the people who are already looking find you. The best way to do this is through marketing. And the best place to do that marketing is on the internet.

Unfortunately many network marketing companies place restrictions on your marketing efforts. Some don't even let you advertise, let alone market. The reason is that they don't want their companies to be misrepresented. This is a legitimate concern, but hinders the ability of distributors to build successful businesses. There are ways around this though.

Fortuna tely some companies recognize that the internet is where business has to be, so they have developed marketing systems their distributors can use. Sounds great, but this is where a potential conflict of interest exists.

Watch Out for the Fox

Remember, the company has developed the product and the compensation plan, much like the biotech companies who develop the GM crops. Now they are developing the marketing system which is like the biotech companies doing their own agriculture assessment. The company could potentially develop a marketing system that appears to benefit the distributor, but really benefits the company at the expense of the distributor.

If you're researching network marketing companies, be sure you understand their marketing rules. And if they offer a marketing system, make sure you understand how the marketing system works and how it supports you. You don't want to end being the hen with the fox guarding the hen house.
